Ophiostomatales (antagonists)

This order of ascomycete fungi contains mainly plant pathogenic species that cause blue stain and other trunk or root diseases in woody plants. For details see the page on plant pathogenic Ophiostomatales. This page deals with antagonistic forms which have been used as biocontrol agents against plant diseases. For example, melanin-deficient strains of Ophiostoma piliferum are being used to prevent the colonisation of sap-staining fungi in pine wood.
