Most strains of Ophiostoma piliferum cause bluestain diseases in the wood of trees like pine or poplar, see the plant pathogenic forms of Ophiostoma piliferum. However, some melanin-deficient strains of O. piliferum have been found to prevent the formation of sap-stain on wood (e.g. see Behrendt et al., 1995). In addition, they can reduce the pitch content in wood chips before pulping (biopulping) and result in better quality paper products.
