This genus contains around 200 species of endoparasitoids which are widely distributed, mainly in warmer regions. They attack eggs of Hemiptera and Lepidoptera, less often those of other arthropods. A number of species have been used for the biological control of insect pests and important parasitoids of agricultural and forest pests include Ooencyrtus kuvanae, O. nezarae and O. pityocampae.
The genus is characterized by a combination of morphological characters like the structures of the antennae and mandibles. The eyes are often conspicuously hairy.
