Olpidium (A. Braun) J. Schröt. 1886
This genus of chytrids includes plant pathogenic fungi which infect mainly vegetables and cucurbits. They infect plant roots and develop as unicellular organisms inside the living cells. They produce zoospores which have a single posterior flagellum and exit the root cell through special tubes. It has been shown that several species can transmit plant viruses, including Cucumber necrosis virus and Melon necrotic spot virus.
