Neoscapteriscus vicinus (Scudder, 1869) - (tawny mole cricket)
This mole cricket is one of several Neoscapteriscus species that have been accidentally introduced from South and Central America into North America around 1900. Neoscapteriscus vicinus was first recorded in Georgia in 1899 (Walker & Nickle, 1981) and is believed to have originated from Argentina or Uruguay. It has spread throughout Florida and along the coast north to South and North Carolina, as well as west to Texas.
N. vicinus has become a serious pest of turf grass and pastures, as well as crops seedlings. Roots and tubers are attacked below ground and leaves and stems above ground. Seedlings are often killed and pulled underground. Annual losses through forage reduction for cattle and through the destruction of turf have been estimated at tenths of millions of US$ in south-eastern North America.
