Neophilaenus campestris (Fallén, 1805)
This species is a polyphagous spittlebug, widely distributed in Europe. In the Mediterranean region it is of concern as a possible vector of the olive quick decline syndrome caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (e.g. see Cavalieri et al., 2019). In some areas it may be more common than Philaenus spumarius, the main vector of that disease.
N. campestris is mainly found on grasses. The adult hoppers are around 5-6 mm long, brownish with two characteristic lighter areas on the forewings around the middle and apical parts of the costa. A taxonomic key for the identification of N. campestris has been published in the EPPO Bulletin (2020).
