Neoerysiphe galeopsidis (DC.) U. Braun 1999
This fungus is widely distributed and causes powdery mildew on a large variety of plants, including species of the genera Galeopsis, Althaea, Catalpa, Lamium, Melissa, Phlomis, Sideritis and Stachys.
It forms lobed apressoria and chains of 5-8 conidia. The latter have a wrinkled surface structure when observed under the microscope and a size of around 30 x 15 µm. In the sexual stage, the chasmothecia resemble those of Erysiphe. They are spherical with a diametre of 100-150 µm, dark brown with a multilayered outer skin (peridium) and 10-30 mycelium-like appendages. The asci contain 2-10 ascospores and develop in the spring. N. galeopsidis is the type species of the genus Neoerysiphe.
