Die Zukunft der biologischen Maiszünslerbekämpfung
[The future of the biological control of the European Corn Borer]
Nachrichtenblatt des Deutschen Pflanzenschutzdienstes 59 (12), 293-296
Abstract: Since more than 25 years Trichogramma brassicae is being used to control the European Corn Borer Ostrinia nubilalis (ECB) in Germany. The biological control of the ECB has to face several challenges. The ECB is spreading to new regions, extreme weather conditions make it difficult to control the ECB efficiently and new pest organisms threaten the corn culture.
On the other hand new and more suitable strains of T. brassicae are being selected and used against the ECB. New pest lepidoptera like Helicoverpa armigera can be controlled by releasing indigenous Trichogramma species. For the first time the option of using a larval parasitoid Bracon brevicornis is being considered. This will support and sustain the biological control of the ECB. Due to global warming research is needed to access the effect on the parasitoids activity as well as on possible changes in the occurrence of the ECB.
