Mucor piriformis A. Fisch. 1892 - (Mucor rot of apple)

This fungus is an important postharvest pathogen, causing a soft rot on apples, pears and other fruits. It enters the fruits mainly through small wounds in the skin. The decaying tissue appears brown with a sharp margin and can be easily separated from the healthy tissue. In an advanced stage, grey mycelia and dark sporangia form on the fruit surface.

The fungus is soil borne and reaches storage facilities through contamination during harvest and packaging. Collecting and destroying fallen infected fruits reduces the soil inoculum and the risk of contamination.
