Microtus agrestis (Linnaeus) - (field vole)
The vole is common in Europe and northern Russia and damages young forest trees and field crops (e.g. Lyly et al. 2014). For example, in the winter it can destroy entire newly established seedling stands of conifers and deciduous trees by browsing on the bark under snow cover. In the summer, it may debark birch trees.
This species can undergo cyclic population explosions. The body grows to a length of about 10 cm. It has a short tail of 3-5 cm. The fur is dark brown on the back and whitish on the belly. Apart from the bark of trees, it feeds on roots and grasses. It lives for about 2 years and can give birth to up to 10 young several times per year.
