Malacosoma Hübner, 1820 - (tent caterpillars)

This moth genus contains around 25 species. Most are found in North America, but there are a few European species. The larvae of most species live gregariously and build silk tents for protection. Several species are important pests of forest and fruit trees and various outbreaks have been reported.

The adults have a short life span, males live for about a week and females only for a day or so. The wing colour is brownish, usually with two light or dark lines across the forewings.

For details see the respective page in Wikipedia.
