Malacosoma californicum Packard, 1864 - (western tent caterpillar)

The moth is native to western parts of North America and attacks various trees like apple, alder or Prunus. The caterpillars feed gregariously within a silken tent, but leave the tent as last instars. Females typically mate and lay eggs shortly after emergence from the pupae.

The populations go through periodic cycles, apparently regulated by the most import natural enemy, the Malacosoma californicum nucleopolyhedrovirus (MacaNPV).
