Maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV)

This virus causes a widespread and important virus disease of maize. It also infects sorghum, including the weedy Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense). The symptoms are leaf mosaic and stunting.

The virus is transmitted by cereal aphids like Rhopalosiphum padi or Sitobion avenae. Yield losses may exceed 50%. Control options include resistant cultivars, crop rotation and the control of Johnsongrass around the fields.

Vernacular names
