Mahanarva Distant, 1909 - (sugarcane froghoppers)

This genus of froghoppers is found in South America where the species feed on gramineous crops like sugarcane, grasses and sorghum. Economically, Mahanarva fimbriolata is the most important species. It can cause yield losses of more than 50% in some areas. The larvae feed on the roots of their host plants while the adults suck the stems and leaves. The genus is characterized by the morphology of the postclypeus, rostrum, antennae, pronotum and genitalia.
