Mahanarva spectabilis (Distant, 1909)
This spittlebug is a pest of pastures in South America, breeding and feeding on forage grasses of the genera Brachiaria and Pennisetum, for example elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum). Nymphs and adult hopper suck the sap of the leaves, weakening the plants and causing a water imbalance. The adult hoppers are particularly harmful, because they inject a toxin during feeding. The toxin leads to yellowing and wilting of the host plants. In addition, the toxin makes the grass unpalatable to cattle.
