Machlomovirus zeae

Assigned virus:
maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV)

The maize chlorotic mottle virus is widely distributed in warmer regions and infects maize and other Gramineae. It causes systemic chlorotic leaf mottling on maize which leads to yield losses.

Coinfections with sugarcane mosaic virus or some other potyviruses result in a fatal disease called maize lethal necrosis or corn lethal necrosis. That disease has caused serious outbreaks in Africa, first in Kenya in 2011 and one year later in neighbouring countries. During those epidemics yield losses reached up to 90% and 126,000 metric tons of maize was lost in Kenya alone.
