Lygaeidae - (seed bugs)

This family is widely distributed and contains around 1,000 species of plant sucking bugs which often feed on seeds. An example of a crop pest is the false chinchbug (Nysius raphanus) which feeds on Brassicas and various other crops.

The adults are elongated or oval in shape, about 5-20 mm long. They may be coloured brightly red or brownish with black marks. The antennae are inserted well down on the sides of the head and have 4 segments. Ocelli are usually present and the rostrum has 4 segments. The scutellum has raised ridges.
