The barley yellow dwarf virus-MAV is part of the Barley yellow dwarf virus complex. It is widely distributed and is transmitted mainly by the cereal aphid Sitobion avenae. The affix "MAV" refers to a synonym of S. avenae, Macrosiphum avenae. Like the other viruses from the BYDVs, the symptoms are characterised by yellowing and dwarfing. Also the flag leaf turns yellow. The main host plants are wheat, barley and oats. Other cereals can also become infected and various grasses have been reported as hosts.
