Larinus minutus (weed bioagent) Gyllenhal - (lesser knapweed flower weevil)
The weevil is native to southern parts of Europe and neigbouring regions in Asia. It has been introduced into North America since 1991 as a biocontrol agent against diffuse and spotted knapweed (Centaurea spp.). The larvae feed inside the capitulum on the developing seeds and can destroy all the seeds. The adults feed on the leaves and flowers. The development time from egg through 2-3 larval instars to adult lasts around 4 weeks.
