Ips paraconfusus Lanier, 1970 - (California fivespined ips)
The bark beetle attacks pine trees in the western U.S.A. Declining and dead trees are infested first. Outbreaks can develop after summer droughts or due to poor logging sanitation. The galleries under the bark typically have a Y-shaped form. Adults are dark reddish-brown and 3-5½ mm long. They have a row of five teeth on the end of each elytra. The species closely resembles Ips confusus. The beetle typically has two (sometime more) summer generations in fallen logs and an overwintering generation in standing trees.
