Hydrocotyle ranunculoïdes (weed) L.f. - (floating pennywort)

This plant is native to the Americas and Africa. In the 1990s, it has been introduced as an ornamental into Europe, Australia and parts of Asia. It has become an invasive aquatic weed in some areas. The weed initially grows near the shore of lakes, canals and slow moving water bodies or in marshes. It can form dense floating mats on the water which might expand at a rate of 20 cm per day.

Like other members of the genus Hydrocotyle, it has stems, but is usually a floating weed with the stems growing horizontally under the water surface and the leaves emerging above the water. Dispersal is mainly through stem segments. Although it develops small flowers, it apparently does not disperse through seeds in the invaded areas.
