Heteronychus Dejean, 1833
This genus of dynastid beetles contains around 100 species and has a wide distribution. Several species are agricultural pests, infesting crops like sugarcane, potatoes, rice and grasses. Both adults and larvae (white grubs) cause damage. For example, Heteronychus arator is native to southern Africa and has been accidentally introduced into Australia and New Zealand where it is a serious pest of pastures and crops.
The genus is characterized by the asymmetric claw on the first tarsi of the males, the lack of projections on the pronotum and two longitudinal stridulation bands on the propygidium.
