Hercinothrips femoralis (Reuter 1891) - (banded greenhouse thrips)

This thrips is found in tropical and subtropical countries, as well as in greenhouses in temperate regions. Outbreaks have become more common since 2000. The thrips is polyphagous and a variety of plants are attacked like vegetables, ornamentals, bananas or citrus. It lives on the leaves, puncturing their cells and sucking out the content. Heavily damaged leaves become silvery.

Adult thrips are around 1½ mm long. The body is mainly dark brown with parts of the head, legs and abdomen being yellowish brown. The forewings have dark bands. The development of one generation lasts around 3-4 weeks under suitable conditions.
