Heracleum mantegazzianum (weed) Sommer & Levier - (giant hogweed)
This species is a large and poisonous perennial weed in pastures and riparian habitats with a deep root stock. It is native to the Caucasus and invasive in Western Europe and North America. Skin contact with giant hogweed can cause serious burns due to the toxic substances produced by the plants. H. mantegazzianum suppresses native plants and dense stands of the weed can result in riverbank erosion.
The plant is usually 2-3 mm tall, but can grow to a height of up to 5 m, with 1-2 m long leaves. It propagates exclusively through seeds and a plant produces 10-20,000 seeds which remain viable for up to 15 years.
