Gutierrezia Lag. - (snakeweeds)

This genus of composite plants contains around 30 species of herbs and small bushes. They are mostly found in the drier parts of southern North America and in parts of South America. The plants grow up to a height of 1-1½ m. They are often described as sub-shrubs and typically have small yellow flower heads and elongated leaves.

Several species are regarded as rangeland weeds in North America. For example, Gutierrezia sarothrae is toxic to livestock and suppresses forage grasses. It is usually avoided by livestock. The weedy species become common after overgrazing, fire, or drought.
