Geranium L. - (cranesbills)
This genus is widely distributed and contains around 400 species of herbaceous plants or shrubs. Some are grown as ornamentals but other are considered agricultural weeds like Geranium carolinianum which affects crops like groundnuts or strawberries in North America and other regions.
The genus is closely related to the genus Pelargonium but is more often found in temperate regions. Both genera can be separated by the morphology of the flowers which have a radial symmetry in Geranium and a zygomorphic or bilateral symmetry in Pelargonium. Both, the English and scientific names of the genus (geranos = crane in Greek) refer to the elongated beak-like fruit capsules.
