Floracarus perrepae (on weeds) Knihinicki and Boczek, 2002
This mite is a natural enemy of the invasive Old World climbing fern, Lygodium microphyllum. It is native to Australia and has been released in Florida since 2008. It was found to be established a few years later, spreading at a rate of several kilometres per year (Lake et al., 2014). Galling by the mites can reduce the biomass of the weed by one third to one half.
The female mites initiate galls on the young leaflets of L. microphyllum, which causes their margins to roll. The development from egg to adult mite is completed in about 1 week.
