Fiorinia externa Ferris - (elongate hemlock scale)
The scale insect is native to Japan and was introduced into New York in 1908. It has become a serious pest of hemlock in eastern North America, where it competes with Adelges tsugae, another introduced hemlock pest. The distribution of both species overlap to a large extent.
F. externa feeds on the underside of the needles. At high densities, it can seriously weaken eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) trees and might kill already-stressed trees. However, it is in general less damaging than the adelgid. If F. externa and A. tsugae occur together in the same stand, F. externa appears to increase in density at the expense of A. tsugae.
