This genus of armored scales is widely distributed and contains more than 50 species. Several are important pests and some are invasive. These infests mainly trees like conifers and fruit trees. Economically, the most important species is the elongate hemlock scale, Fiorinia externa, which is invasive in North America where it attacks hemlock trees. Other species are polyphagous like the tea scale, Fiorinia theae.
The adult female is usually elongated with parallel sides. Other taxonomic characters of the genus include the structure of the pygidium and antennae, location of the anus and the presence or absence of various pores and ducts.
