Exserohilum K.J. Leonard & Suggs 1974 (against weeds)
This fungal genus is wide-spread and includes several important pathogens of crops (see Exserohilum, crop pathogens). Some species and strains are being studied as possible biological control agents of weeds. For example Exserohilum monoceras infects the weed Echinochloa crus-galli and other Echinochloa species.
The genus is closely related to the genera Bipolaris and Drechslera. These 3 genera can be distinguished by their DNA structure. In addition, most species of Exserohilum can be recognised by the conidia having a truncate, strongly protruding hilum. Sexual forms have been described under the genus Setosphaeria.
Type species: Exserohilum turcicum
