Erwinia mallotivora Goto, 1976
This bacterium has been reported from eastern Asia, where it infects papaya plants, causing a dieback disease. The symptoms include spots and chlorosis on the leaves, as well as greasy spots and water-soaked lesions on the fruits and stem. Severe infections can cause the death of the papaya plant.
In Malaysia, outbreaks have caused large-scale economic losses for papaya growers, with around 1 million trees being destroyed by the disease as of 2010. This translated into an estimated loss of US$ 58 million (Taha et al., 2019).
