The function of certain mouth part receptors in relation to feeding in Schistocerca gregaria and Locusta migratoria
Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata 12 (4), 423-440
Abstract: Peg-receptors located on the segments and dome of the maxillary and labial palps and certain sunken receptors on the inner face of the clypeo-labrum of the experimental species were investigated by electro-physiological techniques. All the receptors tested responded to some modality of chemical stimulation and in addition the receptors on the palps contained a mechanoreceptor sense cell.
Responses were obtained from various receptors to stimulation by sucrose, sodium chloride, extracts of grass, extracts of neem seed, acetic and oxalic acids and quinine hydrochloride; the paper describes these findings and discusses how they may relate to the feeding behaviour of the experimental species.
