Echidnophaga gallinacea (Westwood, 1875) - (sticktight flea)

This flea has a worldwide distribution in tropical and subtropical regions. It is an important parasite of domestic chicken and can be also found on other birds and on small mammals like rodents or domestic animals. Infestations cause ulcers and the flea is suspected to be an adiitional vector of the plague, besides Xenopsylla cheopis. Further, it can carry other diseases like Rickettsia.

Females attach themselves firmly to the skin of the host and remain attached for about a month. The eggs or the hatching larvae drop to the ground and the immature stages develop on manure. One generation is completed in 1-2 months.
