Dirhinus Dalman, 1818 - (flea-legged horned parasitoid wasps)

This genus contains around 30-40 species of chalcidid wasps and is widely distributed. The species have been mainly recorded as parasitoids of Diptera, including fruit flies and house flies. Several species are parasitoids of pest flies. For example, Dirhinus giffardii has been introduced into various countries and parasitises mainly fruit fly pupae.

The species are characterised by their bifurcated heads and enlarged hind femurs. They have been called 'flea-legged horned parasitoid wasps'. These "horns" are prominent ridges extending out from the face and enclosing the bases of the antennae.
