Chalcididae (parasitoids)
Chalcididae (parasitoids) - (chalcidid wasps)
This family of parasitoids contains around 1,500 species and is widely distributed. The hosts are mainly Lepidoptera and Diptera pupae and larvae. Most are primary parasitoids, but some are obligatory or facultative hyperparasitoids. A number are regarded as important natural enemies of pest species. For example those of the genus Brachymeria are important endoparasitoids of Lepidoptera pupae or larvae.
The adult wasps are typically robust, 5-6 mm large and resemble small bees. In many species the colour is black with some yellow, white or red markings. However, some have a metallic colour (chalkis = copper in Greek). The hind femora are often swollen and equipped with teeth, enabling them to jump. The hind tibiae are often curved.
