Dendrolimus superans Butler, 1877 - (Sakhalin silk moth, Japanese hemlock caterpillar, larch caterpillar)
This moth is found in Japan and on Sakhalin Island, off far eastern Russia. In morphology and biology it is very similar to Dendrolimus sibiricus, a species which has been previously regarded as a subspecies of D. superans. Both species can cause serious outbreaks on larch and spruce, and also attack other conifers. See Anonymous, 2005 for a discussion and comparison of both species.
