Dendrolimus sibiricus Tschetverikov, 1908 - (Siberian moth)

This moth is found in northern parts of East Asia like Siberia, northern China and Korea where it is a serious defoliator of conifer forests. The main host trees are larch, pine, spruce and fir. The development of the larvae extends over 2 to 4 years and they overwinter in the leaf litter.

The moth and caterpillars are large and adults can reach a wingspan of 10 cm. The wings are yellow-brown to greyish-brown with some black stripes and whitish marks.

Previously D. sibiricus was regarded as a subspecies of Dendrolimus superans but is now treated as a separate species by mot authors. For a discussion and comparison of both species see Anonymous, 2005.
