Dasheen mosaic virus (DsMV)
This is an aphid-borne virus which infects taro, cocoyam and other Araceae. The virus incidence can be high, e.g. up to 60% in elephant yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius) in India which can result in yield losses of more than 30%. The virus spreads mainly through infected planting material. Therefore, the use of tubers from virus-free plants is recommended for planting.
Vanilla mosaic virus (VanMV) is a closely related potyvirus that is regarded as a strain of Dasheen mosaic virus (e.g. see Farreyrol et al., 2006).
