Cuscuta pentagona (weed) Engelm. - (fiveangled dodder, lespedeza dodder)

This species of dodder is widely distributed in North America. It parasitises various crops like clover, alfalfa, beet or vegetables like tomatoes and cabbage, it can be economically important. Colonies can extend over more than 10 m. Each plant produces several thousand hardy seeds which may disperse through water or animals. The seed germinate above 15°C with the optimum temperature being 30°C.

The stems are thread-like, pale yellow-orange in colour and only 0.4-0.8 mm thick. The flowers are about 3 mm in diameter, with a light green calyx which has 5 lobes (angles) and whitish petals. The fruit is a light-brown boll with up to 4 ovoid and pale yellow seeds, each 1-2½ mm long.
