Culex restuans Theobald, 1901
This mosquito species is found in North America and feeds mainly on birds. However, it also bites humans and can transmit important human diseases like St. Louis encephalitis and the West Nile Virus. It breeds in a variety of water accumulations, including pools, ditches and artificial containers.
C. restuans is similar in morphology and in biology to Culex pipiens and both species are difficult to distinguish. They both share similar habitats and are often collected together in mosquito traps. C. restuans has two white spots on the scutum (see illustration at left), but these white scales are easily lost during handling and many individuals emerge without these spots. For the accurate identification of C. restuans see Harrington & Poulson (2008).
