Chrysomyxa rhododendri de Bary 1879 - (spruce blister rust)

This fungus causes a rust disease on spruce needles with the primary host being rhododendron. It is common in high elevation spruce forests of the European Alps and is also found in North America and Asia. On spruce, current-year needles become infected shortly after flushing and turn bright yellow. Infected branches defoliate at the end of the summer and up to 90% of the current‐year foliage may be lost. At that time high concentrations of aeciospores appear, especially after rain events. These infect rhododendron leaves where the fungus forms urediniospores and overwintering teliospores. In spring it forms basidiospores on the lower rhododendron leaves. These spread by wind and infect the fresh needles of spruce.

In the European Alps, the primary host rhododendron has become more wide-spread and conditions for dispersal of both aeciospores and urediniospores are expected to improve with global warming (Ganthaler and Mayr, 2015). The disease results in a lower growth rate and reduced timber yield on spruce.
