Chaetomium (antagonists) Kunze 1817
This genus of ascomycete fungi contains more than 40 species. They have been described as saprobic, storage moulds, plant pathogens (see the page on plant pathogenic Chaetomium) and also as antagonists to plant diseases. This page deals with the latter group of species which inhabit the rhizosphere or live as endophytes. For example Chaetomium globosum is regarded as an endophytic biological control agent (but has been also reported to be a storage mould and plant pathogen).
The ascomata are often spherical or egg-shaped and bear long and flexuous hairs. The single-celled ascospores have a single apical germ pore.
Type species: Chaetomium globosum
