Cerceris fumipennis (predator) Say, 1837
This wasp is native to North America. It hunts brupestid beetles, paralyses them and carries them to its underground nest. The female lays an egg on the paralysed beetle which serves as food for the larva. In North America, the prey includes the invasive emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis. C. fumipennis is used as a survey and monitoring tool to detect the presence of that beetle. For this, nests of the wasp are examined for captured ash borers (e.g. see Careless et al., 2014).
