Cadophora gregata (Allington & D.W. Chamb.) T.C. Harr. & McNew 2003 - (brown stem rot)

The fungus is a soil-borne and infects the roots and then the vascular system of several leguminous crops. Host plants are infected during the seedling stage and the infections remain latent for several months. It then causes leaf abscission, interveinal chlorosis and necrosis of leaves, as well as internal browning of vascular and pith tissues. The plants die prematurely.

The disease is important in North America and Asia and can result in yield losses of more than 10%. Between seasons the fungus survives mainly in plant residues. No teleomorph stage is known. Resistant varietey, crop rotation with non-host crops and tillage (to promote decomposition of infected plant material) are recommended for control.

Cadophora gregata f.sp. adzukicola - causes brown stem rot of adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) in Asia
Cadophora gregata f.sp. sojae - causes soybean brown stem rot in North America (genotype A is more virulent and also causes foliar symptoms)
