Bursaphelenchus mucronatus Mamiya & Enda, 1979

This nematode is common on pine trees in Europe and Asia and is transmitted by long-horned beetles of the genus Monochamus spp. (Cerambycidae). Unlike the closely related Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, it has no or little effect on the trees and is rarely associated with pine wilt disease. Some strains of the nematode appear to be more likely to cause death of pine seedlings than others (Zhou et al., 2016). It competes with B. xylophilus through reproductive interference and can suppress infections by that species if both occur in the same tree. Due to morphological similarities, it is difficult to separate both species morphologically and identification by PCR is more reliable.
