Observations on the effects of carotene on the growth and pigmentation of locusts
Bulletin of Entomological Research 52 (1), 63-81
Abstract: Melanisation is absent or greatly reduced in Locusta migratoria hoppers lacking dietary carotene, and solitaria tendencies develop in them, in activity and also in colour. In Schistocerca gregaria reared on synthetic diets lacking carotene turquoise-blue blood is formed by the 5th instar. The abnormalities of colouration which arise in crowded Locusta and Schistocerca when deprived of carotene are normal in the solitary phase. These abnormalities resemble those consequent upon the implantation of additional corpora allata into gregarious hoppers. The implications of this are discussed in relation to the validity of phase criteria.
