Abstract: The biochemistry of the green and brown pigments in Locusta are discussed. Previous theories to the effect that the green and brown pigmentation is directly related to background colour, to temperature and humidity or to population density are rejected; and it is not accepted that chlorophyll is the basis of the green coloration or that the latter is due to blue and yellow chromoproteins. The green colour is attributed to a chromoprotein of the prosthetic group biliverdin IXa. The biosynthesis of this compound and its oxidation by light irradiation to give brown pigmentation is described.
