Brontispa longissima (Gestro, 1885) - (coconut hispid)
The beetle feeds and breeds between the young still folded leaves of coconut and other palms, often causing browning of the leaves and extensive damage. It is native to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, but has spread to other parts of Asia, the Pacific and to Australia. The introduction of parasitoids has been successful in some of the newly invaded areas.
The beetles are elongated, 8-10 mm in length and flat. They are light brown, but the head and elytra are dark brown to black. Various colour varieties exist. The life cycle lasts about 2 months.
