Brenneria salicis (Day 1924) Hauben et al. 1999 - (watermark disease of willow)

This bacterium has been reported from Europe, Japan and New Zealand. It infects willow and other forest trees, causing branches of affected trees to wilt, and, in severe cases, trees to die. The disease incidence might rech 30% (Grosso et al., 2011). In cross sections, trunks show characteristic watery reddish-brown or brownish-black zones. The pathogen might be already present in the xylem of symptomless trees in a dormant stage during the summer. Altered conditions in sap composition during autumn and winter might then cause the multiplication of the bacterium and the appearance of symptoms (Huvenne et al., 2009).

Erwinia salicis
