Betanecrovirus nicotianae

Assigned virus:
tobacco necrosis virus D (TNVD)

The tobacco necrosis virus D causes necrosis diseases on tobacco and several other crops, for example on olive (e.g. see Félix et al. 2012), cucumber and beans.

Previously, several strains have been described as part of the 'tobacco necrosis virus'. Several of these are now recognized as separate species and two of them are assigned to different genera under the family Tombusviridae. Alphanecrovirus nicotianae (tobacco necrosis virus A) is classified as the type species of the genus Alphanecrovirus, whereas Betanecrovirus nicotianae (tobacco necrosis virus D) is the type species of the genus Betanecrovirus, based on its molecular structure.
